Calbayog Airport Update

With 3 airlines now flying through Calbayog, I thought I would take another trip out to the Sabang Airport, to see what changes have been made. I went out there on February 17th, the day before Cebu Pacific’s first flight.

The first change I noticed was the control tower, which has been rennovated.

Here is how the check in area looked. I was told Cebu Pacific was bringing their banner with them, on their flight the next day. Cebu Pacific will be right next to Zest Air. I guess PAL Express get’s the bigger area, since they fly daily.

Other changes that have been made include new sections of perimiter fence and parking lot improvements. An extension to the runway is also in the works, but waiting for funding.

You can read more about Cebu Pacific’s first flight at the Calbayog City blog article: “Cebu Pacific flies to Calbayog“.

Zest Air grounded.

If you were planning on flying Zest Air between Calbayog and Manila today, you were out of luck. There was a last minute cancellation, due to maintenance issues. Apparently, the plane did not pass a pre-flight inspection, or was otherwise not ready in time for boarding in Manila. About 11 AM the representatives in Calbayog were making a mad dash to contact all the locally ticketed passengers.

If you remember, Zest Air purchased Asian Spirit late last year. There was a short period of no flights, as the planes had to be detailed for the new airlines. On December 26, 2008, Zest Air started their flights to Calbayog. Then, on January 11, 2009, a Zest Air plane crashed at the Caticlan airport. Three people were injured in that crash, when the plane undershot the runway.

While Zest Air will make refunds to passengers of todays cancelled flight, people with connecting flights, or scheduled events, may be out of luck.

Sto Niño Island

For those that have not been to the island of Samar, Sto Nino is an island west of Calbayog City. It is about 14 miles from Calbayog. Many things have changed since I first arrived in Calbayog and Sto Nino in 1981. Sto Nino is only one of the smaller islands that are off of Calbayog City. In addition to Sto Nino, you have Almagro, Camandog, and Tagapul-an islands. Everyday, early in the morning, you will see many larger banka (pump) boats come in from the other islands bringing in fresh fish, copra to sell. Once these people have completed their business, they begin to go out and load up on the supplies for their families or sari-sari stores they may have. Of the many changes, there is still no 24 -7 power on the island of Sto Nino. There are some generators in some of the small barangays and those that can afford to, will run the power wires they need. Some homes have their own generators and use them daily. There is still no roads on the island which means no vehilces at all.

As you can see, the island has millions of coconut trees in which families harvest and sell the copra for an income. All of the families on the island live off the land or sea. Farming is hard as most have to set up farms on the sides of the mountains on the island or very small areas around their homes.

The first two pictures show an area on Sto Nino where the family cleaned up and set up an area where the family could go to swim with their little ones and have an area to get out of the sun and have picnics or BBQ.

Salmonella in Samar

Looks like the southern portion of Samar Province is having a pig problem. In the past 2 months, 84 of Sta. Rita’s 8,900 pigs have died of Salmonella infection. Leo Cañeda, executive regional director of the Department of Agriculture, held a meeting in Tacloban on Friday, with some of Samar’s mayors and government agriculturists and veterinarians. A total of 750 pigs have been affected, but agriculture officials assure there is “no cause for alarm”.

There were also reports that Daram may have pigs with Salmonella infection, so an emergency response team was sent there, for a 2 day animal health mission. Sick pigs were treated, and information about dealing with salmonellosis was given out.

Check points have been set up around Sta. Rita, and also in Tacloban, Leyte, to help prevent the spread of this outbreak. Tacloban, the Region 8 Capital, is only 40 km away from Sta. Rita.
